Natural Remedies for Dry Eyes

Natural Remedies for Dry Eyes

Eye dryness is common, especially with age or if you stare at a computer screen all day long. However, chronic dry eyes can be a symptom of an underlying health condition (i.e., lupus and thyroid disorders). Tears are composed of a lubricating mucus layer, water to provide moisture, and oil to prevent evaporation. A shortened list of possible causes of dry eyes includes age-related changes, allergies, blowing air or smoke, unbalanced tear production, inadequate blinking, malnutrition, scarring or other eye damage, medication side effects, and conditions such as those mentioned above.

Dry eyes symptoms may involve stinging, scratchiness, discharge, light sensitivity, difficulty wearing contact lenses, or blurred vision. Whatever the cause, dry eyes can result in damage over time, and even permanent vision loss. Contact your healthcare provider’s office if your condition worsens. In the meantime, here are some natural remedies for dry eyes:

1. Warm eye compresses
Wash your hands and wet down a clean cloth with either warm or cool water. Rest the cloth on your eyelids for a few minutes as needed. In the morning and at night you can also loosen eyelid debris by rubbing gently with diluted baby shampoo or mild soap, being sure to rinse well.

2. Omega-3 rich foods
Nutritional deficiencies affect many body functions. Omega-3 fatty acids benefit your eyes as well as your heart and brain. This valuable nutrient occurs most abundantly in cold-water fish such as salmon, cod, and sardines. You can also add it to your diet by eating walnuts and other tree nuts and by taking quality supplements.

3. Castor oil
Castor oil is an old remedy for constipation, but studies show it to be very helpful in reducing eyelid inflammation and in thickening the natural oil in tears, keeping the eyes moist longer. It’s safe to use when applied correctly. Because it can cause temporary blurriness, many people prefer to use the drops before bedtime.

4. Running a humidifier
Most sufferers report relief of symptoms when they use a humidifier producing cool mist, especially when placed at the bedside. Many models of all sizes are available, and some are even portable. The most important aspect is regular cleaning according to directions to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria.

5. Natural tears eye drops
All eye drops are not the same. Manufacturers add preservatives to some formulas to allow the drops to be stored longer, but these cause irritation to some people. Preservative-free single dose vials are available. A note of caution: although special drops to “get the red out” may sound appealing, they act by drying your eyes even further. You can buy many brands of lubricating natural tear eye drops over the counter or online, but if your dry eyes are severe, ask your healthcare provider about medicated prescription eye drops and ointments.

Unless your healthcare professional advises otherwise, drink more water to prevent dehydration. Take breaks when using your devices, and position the devices lower than eye level so your eyelids cover more surface and thereby prevent evaporation. And make it a point to blink more often. Dry eyes are not to be ignored – they definitely have an impact in your daily life. Communicate with your health provider to learn more about all kinds of help that is available for you.
